Scene Around Town: Dallas Arboretum and Junior League of Dallas
As Society Editor for the Katy Trail Weekly I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In this week’s January 27 issue, I was pleased to spotlight photos featuring highlights from the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden’s annual Great Contributors Award dinner which honored two remarkable Texas women —Laura Bush and The Honorable Kay Bailey Hutchison. The Great Contributors Award is bestowed on individuals whose contributions have made an important positive impact on the state, country and world as the Dallas Arboretum works to contribute to Dallas recognition from throughout the world. Funds raised help the Dallas Arboretum fund the 100,000 school-age children who attend field trips; underwrite 25,000 tickets to provide access to the garden to those unable to pay; and provide upkeep for the 66-acre garden to remain ‘best in class.’
Also featured were scenes from Junior League of Dallas members and guests who uncovered “Timeless Treasures” at the Junior League of Dallas Auction. The event, co-chaired by Carrie Hill and Jennifer Welden, was held at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. This year’s theme symbolized the value of JLD’s many community partners, donors, and members. The event focused on the literal treasures at the museum, including a VIP experience in the Lyda Hill Gems and Minerals Hall. The evening included a silent auction, dancing, gaming, and a diamond pull courtesy of Cook Diamonds. Guests were treated to music performed by an ensemble from Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts as they arrived, and The Special Edition Band kept the party going all night. Patrons also enjoyed a bonus after-hours adventure to “Stay & Play” in the Museum from 10 p.m. until midnight.
