Scene Around Town, Katy Trail Weekly (July 23, 2021)

As Society Editor for the Katy Trail Weekly I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In this week’s July 23-29 issue, I was pleased to spotlight the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League who introduced the 2021-2022 debutantes during Announcement Weekend festivities held May 27- May 30. The weekend marked the official start of a season of events culminating with the 36th Presentation Ball, which will be held February 12, 2022. The Stewpot Alliance recently presented The Stewpot with a check for $317,639.00 raised from the March 4 virtual luncheon with award-winning chef, restaurateur and humanitarian Chef José Andrés, moderated by Robert Wilonsky. Now in its 46th year, The Stewpot serves our neighbors who are experiencing and at risk of homelessness by providing meals (over 8,000,000 to date), counseling and case management, medical and dental services via onsite partners, youth and family stabilization programs, as well as therapeutic and vocational activities. Lastly, Turtle Creek Conservancy’s signature fundraiser, the 13th Annual Day at the Races, was an exciting hybrid event (both live-streamed and in-person) highlighting the Kentucky Derby and featured the tremendously successful “Derby in a Box.” This fun and engaging concept allowed people to gather in the comfort of their own homes for a Derby party and watch the live broadcast from Turtle Creek Park. Modeled after the Central Park Conservancy in New York City, the mission of the Turtle Creek Conservancy is to raise the essential private funding needed to give elevated care and thoughtful development to the heart of the Turtle Creek Corridor, Turtle Creek Park and Arlington Hall, for today and tomorrow.
