Scene Around Town, Katy Trail Weekly (July 16, 2021)

As the Katy Trail Weekly’s Society Editor I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In this week’s July 16-22 issue, I was pleased to spotlight Bryan’s House Leadership who welcomed a new Board and congratulated staff and teams at their first in-person event since March 2020. The Galleria Dallas hosted black designers from across the US at the Black Fashion Movement preview party last month. The Black Fashion Movement launched in February 2020 as a grassroots social media campaign to celebrate, promote and support black-owned fashion brands during Black History Month. The Senior Source’s 60th birthday bash, The Diamond Dance-Off – culminated in a live finale at Klyde Warren Park with the crowning of the best senior dancer in Dallas. A panel of celebrity judges, including Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson, crowned longtime Dallas resident Michael Nemes, aka ‘Pappa Phunk,’ as The Diamond Dance-Off Crown Title Winner. Launched in March, The Diamond Dance-Off has been The Senior Source’s way of celebrating turning 60 years old while highlighting their volunteers and shining a spotlight on older adults in Dallas. Lastly, one of my personal favorite events, the Dallas Arboretum’s Food and Wine Festival recently took place with A Gatsby Garden themed soirée. Guests strolled the garden while enjoying music, fine wines, craft beer and delectable small plates prepared by top local area chefs.
