Scene Around Town: Equest, Wipe Out Kids Cancer, and Cristo Rey

As Society Editor for the Katy Trail Weekly I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In this week’s August 19 issue, I was pleased to spotlight photos featuring highlights from the Blue Ribbon Ball benefiting Equest. Co-Chairs Carol and Bill Huckin, Finley and Eric Konrade, and Elsa Norwood with honorary chairs Leslie and Hawkins Golden, welcomed more than 550 patrons to the 41st annual gala on Saturday, June 4, 2022 where more than $600,000 was raised. Funds raised will help Equest continue to provide equine assisted learning, therapies and counseling to children and adults with physical, cognitive, sensory, coping and learning disabilities, as well as veterans who receive all of Equest’s services at no charge.

Jackie Thornton and her daughter, Jenice Dunayer, co-chairs of the Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer (WOKC) 40th Anniversary Celebration Gala, pulled out all the stops for the event. Honorary Chairs Peter and Tatiana Cancro, to the surprise of everyone in the room, presented a check for $1 million to WOKC, as a totally stunned Cindy Brinker Simmons Founder of WOKC and also a Patron Presenting Sponsor graciously accepted, surrounded by a rousing round of standing applause and cheers. For four decades, WOKC has been dedicated to eradicating childhood cancer by funding innovative research, education, and treatment.

Lastly, Grow the Grove co-chairs Barbara and Jim Moroney and Mary and Mike Terry were joined by more than 350 guests at Cristo Rey Dallas’ 6th annual Grow the Grove, presented by the Partners ofPwC, on Friday, May 6, 2022, 6:30 p.m. at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. Funds raised will aid Cristo Rey, a college preparatory school for students from households of low to moderate incomes.
