Scene Around Town, Katy Trail Weekly (May 28, 2021)
As the Katy Trail Weekly’s Society Editor I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In the May 28-June 3 issue, I was pleased to spotlight the Dallas Symphony Orchestra League’s annual Savor the Symphony event held at the Ritz-Carlton, Dallas, on Thursday, April 29. . The fundraiser was held as a hybrid event - ticket holders enjoyed the event in person at the Ritz-Carlton, or they opted to have their three-course dinner, featuring two Texas wineries, delivered to their home with the event program streamed directly to them. Proceeds benefit the education and outreach programs of the DSO. The Young Musicians was launched recently as part of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra’s Southern Dallas Residency, providing free instruments and free instruction to students in Dallas’s southern area through after-school and summer camp programs. Also included in this week’s feature are Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing Arts art students who showed their artwork at the inaugural Black Heritage Celebration at the Dallas Arboretum on May 1st.
Over the past six months, the Avondale Collision & Repair team has been dedicating their spare hours to completely repairing, restoring, and renovating a pickup truck to grant a wish with the help of Make-A-Wish North Texas for a very deserving recipient, John. John purchased a pickup truck that he worked on and paid for by himself, which he named “Ugly Betty.” This truck is essential to his volunteer work at the Westside Fire Department in Palestine, Texas. John plans on going to Fire Academy this summer. After being diagnosed with Leukemia, John unfortunately had to give up his lifelong dream of joining the military, therefore he became a volunteer firefighter at the Westside Fire Department. Firefighting has become his new passion, alongside working on “Ugly Betty.” John is graduating from high school this year and hopes to attend the Fire Academy. As an ode to his dedication to the fire department, Avondale Group unveiled to him a firetruck red, brand-new version of “Ugly Betty” on Friday, May 7.
Texas Women’s Foundation held its 42nd annual Leadership Forum and Awards Celebration (LFAC), presented by AT&T, on April 29. The Foundation honored five Maura Women Helping Women recipients and two Young Leader Award recipients who have made positive impacts in the lives of women and girls. LFAC netted $475,000 to further the mission of Texas Women’s Foundation. And lastly, Babe Laufenberg delighted Wipe Out Kids’ Cancer (WOKC) Warriors (children with cancer) and their families by joining a small viewing party for the virtual WOKC Buddy Bag Bash presented by the Dallas Magnolias, at the Angelika Film Center & Café in Dallas, on the evening of May 4, 2021. The inspirational virtual event, which funded WOKC Buddy Bags — care packages for children undergoing cancer treatment** — featured Babe Laufenberg sharing his late son Luke’s personal journey with childhood cancer through an exclusive conversation with CBS 11 anchor Karen Borta.
