Woodhouse Day Spa Introduces Salt Therapy

Thanks to COVID-19, respiratory health is on everyone’s radar. The Woodhouse Day Spa just rolled out a new service called Halotherapy - an alternative treatment that involves breathing salty air to improve respiratory health. Some claim that it can treat respiratory conditions, such as asthma, chronic bronchitis, and allergies. Also known as salt therapy, Halotherapy cleanses and detoxes the lungs and invigorates the entire body by increasing lung capacity and oxygen intake. Halotherapy is usually broken down into dry and wet methods, depending on how the salt is administered.

According to a Healthline article, “The dry method of halotherapy is usually done in a man-made “salt cave” that’s free of humidity (this what The Woodhouse Day Spa offers in their Salt Chamber). The temperature is cool, set to 68°F (20°C) or lower. A device called a halogenerator grinds salt into microscopic particles and releases them into the air of the room. Once inhaled, these salt particles are claimed to absorb irritants, including allergens and toxins, from the respiratory system. Advocates say this process breaks up mucus and reduces inflammation, resulting in clear airways. The salt particles are said to have a similar effect on your skin by absorbing bacteria and other impurities responsible for many skin conditions.”

Leo Tonkin, CEO and Founder of SALT Chamber, says, "Salt therapy is a natural way to create distinct wellness experiences in a relaxing and nurturing environment, and it's great to initiate this new partnership. Inhaling dry salt particles may reduce inflammation of the entire respiratory tract and widen airway passages. Dry salt particles are also known to accelerate mucus' transportation and eliminate residual tar and foreign allergens."

Woodhouse Spa was kind enough to invite me in to experience Halotherapy for myself. So what was it like? Well, I thought it was going to be a massage using salt rocks. But it was more like them rubbing you gently with hot rocks. So, while it was VERY relaxing, it was not at all like a massage. It was about the same pressure you would get if you were applying lotion to yourself when you got out of the shower. This treatment is more about health benefits than your typical spa treatment, but if you are into the latest and greatest in wellness treatments, I would encourage you to give it a try. The cost is $150 for a 50-minute treatment.
